At Forward Motion Sports, we use the word "Foil" or "Foiling" to encompass different forms of Foil Surfing without wind -- such as: Downwind Foiling, Wake Foiling, Pump Foiling and Prone Foiling!  While Foiling, the Surfer's goal is to stand on a Foil Board, have it raise out of the water and then maintain its glide using technique and momentum.

Like anything Surf related, Foiling takes time, dedication and effort.  It may take more than one session to get your groove on.  By choosing the right equipment, learning water and foil safety, and practicing regularly, we believe anyone can be soaring over the water experiencing the adrenaline and joy Foiling Brings!

We teach our Foil Lessons using a Foil Drive System, which gives the Surfer the power boost needed to raise the Board out of the Water on Foil.

01 - Downwind Foiling

Downwing Foiling is when the Surfer stands on a Foil Board and propels themselves forward to get to speed raising the Foil out of the water.  The Surfer continues to ride on Foil moving in one general direction -- Downwind, i.e. in the direction of the Wind and Current.  The Surfer continues riding on the Foil Board 'Downwind', connecting wind chop and current lines for the duration of the ride.  A ride back to the starting point will be needed.

02 - Prone Foiling

Prone Foiling is a combination of Pump Foiling and Surf-Regular (i.e. Surfing on Waves).  Using a Foil Board, the Surfer can catch and ride smaller, less powerful waves than a regular surfboard.  Like Surf-Regular, the Surfer will paddle or somehow propel themselves forward to catch a wave.  As the Foil Board starts to be pushed by the wave, the Surfer will stand up ('pop up') on the Board, and the Foil will raise out of the providing the Surfer a gliding, hover experience on the face of the wave.

After the wave-ride is finished, the Surfer can carve out of the wave, and by using technique and momentum, continue to pump and glide above the water while returning back to the wave line-up!  Imagine catching waves not even a 12 Foot Long Board could ride!

03 - Pump Foiling

Pump Foiling is typically down on flat water.  It is when the Surfer solely uses their body movement and a rhythmic momentum to Pump the Foil Board, keeping it lifted from the water for a smooth ride.  A Pump Foil board is typically very small, making it easier for the Surfer to keep the Board out of the water than a heavier board may permit.

Advanced Pump Foil Surfers can launch their Foil Board from a dock, ladder or straight from the beach for the ultimate Pump Foiling experience!

04 - Wake Foiling

Wake Foiling is when the Surfer stands on a  Foil Board and is pulled  behind a Jetski or Boat with a tow rope to get to speed (generally around 9-12 mph).  Then, the Foil Board will rise out of the water due to the use of a foil shaped fin and the Surfer will be gliding above the water in a low impact surf experience.  The Surfer can choose to keep holding onto the Tow Rope for the length of the ride, or let go and continue to ride behind the watercraft using their technique, momentum, and glide of the Foil riding the wake.
